Chalk Hill Cargving, Wiltshire: Nortent Skjul Bivvi Camp
Mid-September 2025
I headed out to check out this wonderful chalk hill carving in Wilshire, and to find a spot to camp close by.
The chalk carving was on the side of a large, open hill with plenty of large grass areas, but I ended up camping in a not-so-ideal spot nearby.
After the chalk carving, I tried to find the local trig point to bag. But as the light faded, I didn’t have enough time to find it.
All the grass areas looked great on the map, but the ground was very uneven. I settled for the best flat area I could find, which was along side a fenced off group of trees and on a path, which wasn’t ideal but good enough.
I did think about heading into the small woodland across the fence, but I wasn’t sure if it was private. The path wasn’t ideal, but it was far from any car parks or houses, I’d be up early, and the forecast wasn’t great- which usually helps keeps people away anyway.
The spot felt a little exposed and not one I’d normally choose, but it was fine. The morning was very misty, and it didn’t clear until I’d climbed back towards the bottom of the hill. I wasn’t disturbed all night.
