      Woolsbarrow Hillfort Bloxworth Heath Dorset

      Late August 2024

This is one of many woodlands and heathlands just north of Wareham which offers plenty of places to camp

The whole area is quite large and made up of many pockets of woodland and plenty of heathland which can be boggy. In my visits, it has always seemed very quiet and peaceful with very few visitors.

I spotted the hillfort on Google maps and thought that the surrounding woodland offered plenty of places for the hammock.

      Coordinates:

      50°44’01.1″N 2°09’13.0″W

      Getting there:

I walked from Wareham train station which, according to Google maps is 3.5 miles / 5.6 km to the hillfort via Bere and Sugar Hill road. I looked at the street view and only part of this road is walkable.

I deemed it too risky to go via the road and chose to walk through the golf course and via the heath which according to my app, was 4.5 miles / 7.2 km. It took me roughly 1 hour 20 to do the return walk to Wareham train station from the hillfort and 1 hour 45 from the train station to the hillfort.

The closest three car parks that I can see on the map are along Sugar Hill road. Distance wise, and as the crow flies – they range from 0.6 miles / 1 km to 1.2 miles / 2 km from the hillfort.

I don’t know whether overnight parking is permitted or how secure it is to leave a vehicle overnight.

      Heads up:

I’ve been to the woodland and heathland area north of Wareham only twice, but I’ve never seen many people.

There have been a few walkers and dog walkers but they all seem to leave by dusk. I’ve seen most of the people in the area near the golf course. Between the golf course and the hillfort, I hardly saw anyone.

The area has many bogs, both large and small. Which means quite a few beasties.
