Isle of Purbecks, Dorset: OEX Phoxx 1v2 Tent Camp
Late February 2026
Here’s the link to the YouTube kit list video of everything I took: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jPfq0MSH1EA
First camp out in a while. Recently, I left quite a few items of gear including my bivvy, tent, tarp, boots, and backpack at a place that got flooded. It took a while to clean and replace some things, and in the meantime, I lost a little motivation.
I headed to Corfe Castle, and it was one of the first sunny days this year, so I was lucky to get a parking spot. I’ve camped on a hill to the west of Corfe, which leads to Flower’s Barrow and Worbarrow Bay. This time, I decided to go to the eastern hill that leads to Swanage and Old Harry Rocks. On the map, there looked to be plenty of spots to camp, and I could bag the trig point TP0749 – Coringdon.
It was sunny during the day and later on, the wind picked up and a storm came in. I checked out many spots along the way to the trig point, but I wanted to be close to the car in the morning, as the storm was set to bring heavy rain, and I wanted to limit how wet I got.
There was lots of woodland along one side of the hill, which was perfect for a hammock. The top and sides of the hill are grassy but exposed. I picked out a few spots in bushes and gorse, but in the end, I settled on a semi-flat spot on the side of the hill that was sheltered by gorse and less out in the open.
At 4 a.m., I made the decision to pack up and head off the hill. The weather was expected to be worse around dawn, and at 4 a.m. there was a small window of better conditions.
It was blowing a gale and pouring with rain as I headed down by the light of a head torch. It was good to be back out, and I really had a great camp and a little adventure.

Getting there:
I drove and parked the car in the West Street car park in the village. It’s open 24 hours, has public toilets, and is surrounded by a few properties. Best of all, it’s free after 18:00 at weekends.

I parked up and the place was muddy and packed. When I returned in the morning, my car was the only vehicle there.
The Purbeck Breezer buses, number 30 and 40 go through Corfe Village.
Heads up:
I took my Phoxx 1v2, and finding a flat spot on the top of the hill was no issue. But as it is a hill, there are obviously not many flat areas on the side of it, and the ground is grazing land and very uneven too.
The Phoxx 1v2 is pretty small, so I was able to find a sheltered spot. The bivvi would have been better.
I avoid all areas of the Purbecks and the Dorset coast during the summer holiday from July to the start of September as it is too crowded.
Good phone and internet signal.
