      Hambledon Hill, Child Okeford Dorset

      Late June 2025

A peaceful, albeit a windy night on Hambledon Hill.

This huge Iron Age hillfort in Dorset is one of the most impressive I’ve camped on, with stunning views in all directions. The sunset didn’t disappoint, and I’m the sunrises are just as awesome.

The hill is easy to reach, with several access points and plenty of space to camp. Options include on the hilltop, tucked along the sides and base or hidden in the ramparts. There’s even more ground beyond the hill toward the trig point, though I didn’t explore much in that direction this time.

I bivvied right on a path, avoiding the long grass because it was June and nesting season. No trees around the top of sides, so only suitable for a tent or bivi.

There are some trees around the base of the hill, but most are close to nearby houses. Behind the hill, there appears to be a more forested area, which I didn’t explore. I only ventured that way briefly to bag the trig point.

Hambledon Hill is crisscrossed with well-cut paths, making it easy to roam. On the way down, I made sure to stop by the Hambledon Hill Farm Stone Circle, which is definitely worth checking out.

      Getting there:

I parked on Homefield in the village of Child Okeford, where there’s plenty of quiet on-street parking. I entered the hill via the Duck Street entrance and came down through the Hambledon Hill Farm Stone Circle area, exiting onto Shaftesbury Road. Both the route up and back were roughly 1.7 miles (2.7 km) each way.

      Heads up:

Apart from the hill being an area for ground nesting birds in the summer. I didn’t see anyone else on the hilltop all evening. The only person I spotted was a runner passing near the trig point, which sits just beyond the main hill. They didn’t enter the hill itself.

No trees around the top of sides, so only suitable for a tent or bivi. Good phone and internet signal
