      Holt Heath West Moors, Dorset

      Mid – January 2025

The reserve is a low-lying heathland, split into two sections by a road. Some areas are particularly wet, with a raised boardwalk allowing passage over the boggiest parts. The sections I explored were muddy and had few trees.

I set up on a small hill among dried ferns, beneath a lone tree. Though not a vast wilderness, with roads and buildings visible and audible, it still offered a peaceful spot for the night.

Under a clear sky, I enjoyed some exercise and an undisturbed sleep. I passed a few evening walkers while scouting for a pitch and saw early dog walkers in the morning.

With a job interview ahead, I was packed up by 6 a.m. and heading back to the car.

      Getting there:

I parked on Ashurst Road, just off Station Road. There are plenty of roadside parking options in the area, all without restrictions.

To access the heath, I followed The Castleman Trail, entering from Station Road next to the West Moors Memorial Hall.

I also noticed the hall has a car park, though I’m unsure if there are any restrictions or if visitors are allowed to use it.

      Heads up:

A very good 4G phone reception.

Like most places in winter, it can be wet and boggy. Being a reserve, you’ll need to be mindful in spring and summer to protect nesting birds and other wildlife. I imagine there may be restrictions and signage in place to guide visitors.
