Agglestone Rock, Studland and Godlingston Heath Nature Reserve, Dorset
Early December 2024
This place rocks!
Bizarre doesn’t do this place justice. A 400 tonne rock, perched on a mound in the middle of a heathland.
Anyway, I had a really beautiful night at Agglestone Rock. The views out to sea and the silhouette of Agglestone Rock against the sky was epic.

Getting there:
I got the number 50 Purbeck Breezer from Bournemouth, which took about an hour and and goes via the Sandbanks’ ferry across to the Isle of Purbeck. No extra cost for the ferry crossing as it is included in the bus fare.
I got off at the Wadmore Lane stop on Ferry Road as I thought I could enter the heath from here. I walked up a few bridleways and into some fields but I got lost and found it difficult to get on the heath. I managed to find and get onto the heath, via a gate close to Agglestone Road.
In the morning, I left via Agglestone Road as it was far simpler to reach Ferry Road. The route I took was along Agglestone Road, onto Heather Green Road, which led to Ferry Road. I boarded the same bus (50 Purbeck Breezer) at the Beach Road stop.
I did notice a handful of parking spaces were available on Agglestone Road, which is a short dead end road with a few houses.
Heads up:
A good internet connection.
I wasn’t disturbed and had no issues during the night, Agglestone Rock is surrounded by flat, level sand which offers a choice of a few suitable spots.
I chose this spot, on this side of the rock, because it offered good shelter from the cold wind. I waited until well after dark to set up camp, as a precaution, because the rock isn’t far from a few roads and a golf course. I also had a hunch that local dog walkers were familiar with the area and could potentially visit at any time
Perched on a raised mound, the rock offers a 360° view, ideal for keeping an eye out for torchlights in the distance. One path behind is partially concealed by a hill, limiting visibility and reducing the notice you’d get from that direction compared to others.
