      St Aldhelm’s Head Dorset

      Early November 2024

I had planned to reach this spot before dark and continue along the coast a bit further to find a spot away from the coast guard building.

That all changed when I got caught out by the dark and the mist. So, for obvious safety reasons, I settled where I settled.

I didn’t know there were people living in the nearby buildings until the mist cleared later in the night and I saw lights on.

Anyway, it was a lovely walk up the St Aldhelm’s steps in the dark which made for a memorable night. I didn’t see anyone all night and slept quite well despite the wind.

      Coordinates:

      50°34’52.7″N 2°03’32.4″W

      Getting there:

I took the train to Wareham and then hopped on the Purbeck Breezer 40 (bus stop outside the station) to the village of Kingston which takes less than 20 minutes.

It’s about a 3.5 mile/ 5.6km walk from the bus stop in Kingston to the spot I camped in and it took me just under 1.5 hours.

At the time of writing, free parking is available at parking Rencombe about 1.5 miles/2.4 km walk away. I don’t know if there are any restrictions on overnight parking, but I have heard about a height restriction on the entrance and the place has some brutal potholes.

      Heads up:

      A good internet connection.

A really quiet area in the colder months and on the South West Path so expect some visitors in the warmer months.

A certain level of fitness is required to walk here from the Chapman’s pool side as it entails walking down and then up the St Aldhelm’s steps.

My camp spot was a little too close to the buildings, as you can see from the images. More remote areas along the coast.
