Dan posted an update
Gritnam Wood, Lyndhurst New Forest
Late October 2024
This was a no-frills, quick and peaceful evening out hammock camping.
The New Forest – though not remote – offers plenty of places to camp and it’s super easy for me to get to.
Admittedly, you’re never too far from a house, farm or village, but at the same time, it’s minimal fuss and you don’t have to travel too far to find a great spot.

Getting there:
On Google maps, this area is not named, but if you enter New Forest, this spot is pretty much right where the label ‘New Forest’ sits.
I found the name Gritnam Woods on whatawalk.com and the woods are right next to a group of buildings called Gritnam.
I drove to Lyndhurst as it is not served by the train and I am unsure of the buses.
I saw on Google maps a few places to park and these included around the outskirts of Lyndhurst but I couldn’t find any information about costs or restrictions.
Because of this, I chose to park in the village centre because I read another review saying that this car park was free after 6pm. This wasn’t true and I paid £8 to park for up to 24 hours but at least the car park was monitored by CCTV.
When I visited, there were large tailbacks as a result of road works and temporary traffic lights in the village centre which made moving around in a vehicle difficult. I chose to stay put in the car park.
The camp was about 2.3 miles / 3.5 km from the car park.
Heads up:
Nothing to report about the camp. A very quiet spot and a bit away from the main path. There’s been lots of rain recently and the ground was either waterlogged at worst, or boggy at best.
There’s always plenty of trees for a hammock, and plenty of flat grassy areas for a tent or bivi in the New Forest and this area was no exception.
I didn’t leave especially early in the morning as I knew I wouldn’t be disturbed. I did see a few dog walkers on the main path as I headed out. They gave me some funny stares as I did my usual litter pick.
Unfortunately, there’s some background noise in this area. It sits under a flight path for either Bournemouth or Southampton airport as well as being located between the A35 and the A337.

3 CommentsForget to mention that the internet connection was patchy and very slow in the area.
