      Old Harry Rocks Dorset

      Mid October 2024

I’ve wanted to camp at Old Harry Rocks for some time.

It was a wet and windy night which would mean that not many will venture out and I should have the place to myself.

I’d love to bivi camp up here on a clear night but I went with the tent for some protection from the wind and rain.

There are plenty of flat grassy spots all along the cliff tops and the hill leading to the Old Harry Rocks. There are also a few cosy little tucked away spots in the bushes with great views out to sea.

As it was windy and I had forgotten to bring a sleeping mat, I chose to shelter behind a hedge away from the cliff top for safety reasons and the fact that there was long grass to act as a mattress.

I had the place to myself and I had some great views of the chalk cliffs in the evening and a nice sunrise in the morning.

      Getting there:

Old Harry Rocks is on the SW Coast Path so is accessible from two directions.

I took the Purbeck Breezer 50 via the Sandbanks’ ferry and got off at Currendon Hill as I wanted to walk along the hill tops to check out any potential spots for later or in case I was unable to camp at Old Harry Rocks.

It’s about a 3 mile/ 4.8 km walk from Currendon Hill bus stop to where I camped. I took the same bus in the morning but this time I walked the other way to Studland village – that’s a shorter walk of about 1.3 miles / 2 km.

There’s a National Trust car park near South Beach but I think there are charges. Studland village has some on-road parking on School Lane and Watery Lane.

      Head’s up:

      Nothing to report.

Personally, I avoid the coastal areas of Dorset in the summer months as I find that they are really busy.

I packed up early but I didn’t leave until around 7am. I saw a photographer and a dog walker heading to the cliff tops as I was walking to the bus stop in Studland.

There are 24 hour toilets on the bend of Manor Road and Watery Lane and this is where you get the path that leads to Old Harry.
