Ipley Enclosure Near Beaulieu Road Station New Forest Hampshire

      Mid-March 2025

I haven’t been out in a while, so I chose this quiet part of the forest, with plenty of new areas still to explore.

Ipley Enclosure is surrounded by heathland and woodland, offering a variety of spots to sling up a hammock or pitch a tent.

When I camped here, the woodland and surrounding area were still cold and boggy. The Beaulieu River runs through the enclosure, with some grassy banks in places that are flat enough for a tent.

I set up on the edge of the enclosure, with a view of the setting sun. The ground here was soft and flat, making it ideal for pitching up. I was also midway between the road and a car park – giving me some time in the morning before the chance of being disturbed.

      Getting there:

I took the train and walked from Beaulieu Road Station, which is about 3.4 miles (5.4 km) away. The nearest car park is King’s Hat, located on the southern edge of the enclosure.

Like other car parks in the New Forest, I’m unsure about any parking restrictions, such as overnight stays. There’s also the consideration of leaving a vehicle unattended overnight.

Dibden Purlieu – which I believe is part of Southampton -is only 1.5 miles (2.55 km) away as the crow flies. From looking at the map, it seems to have ample on-road parking and is close enough to be a walkable option.

      Heads up:

As I mentioned, this part of the forest is really quiet. There are a few dwellings, roads, and car parks nearby, but very few people – despite the built-up area of Dibden Purlieu being only 1.5 miles (2.55 km) away as the crow flies.
