Great Oven’s Nature Reserve Wareham Dorset
Early May 2024
This was a spur of the moment camp on a crisp and clear beautiful night in early May.
I have never camped in this area before and so I wandered around for a few hours checking the whole place out and looking for a suitable place for the bivi.
I took so long looking for a spot that it was getting pretty dark. I was backtracking to an area that I had walked through earlier in the evening.
It was a spot that was close to Wareham and meant that I only had a short walk back to the train station and the bonus of a clear and uninterrupted view of the night’s sky.

Getting there:
I got the train to Wareham and walked the 1.4 miles / 2.2 km from there. There are a few free car parks along B3075 Morden Road and the closest of these is the Woodlark car park BH20 4ER which is only 0.2 miles / 0.3 km away.
Heads up:
I only saw a couple of walkers earlier as I made my way here but I didn’t see anyone in this section of the reserve in the time I was there.
Plenty of trees in the area to hang a hammock. I will return to the area for a hammock camp in the future.
There are signs advising about nesting birds in the area and to stick to the paths from spring to the end of summer.
