      Corfe Castle, Dorset.

      Early July 2024

I’ve been wanting to camp here for a long time and I finally got around to it just before the busy summer holidays.

I bedded down in the soft long grass with a view of the castle. I camped on this hill as opposed to the other because I wanted to catch the sunrise from behind the castle. Due to the cloud, that didn’t happen.

I should have camped on the other hill to catch the sunset and also because I didn’t see anyone on that hill. The hill I was on had had the viewpoint and of course had a few visitors and groups in the evening. I think I’ll return and camp on the other hill in the autumn.

It was still a nice evening.

      Getting there:

I got off the train at Wareham and got the number 40 Breezer bus which goes between Poole and Swanage. The bus stop is right by Wareham train station. It cost £2 for a single to Corfe village and took about 10 mins. I took the same bus in the morning on the return to Wareham train station.

I took the bus rather than walking because my legs were not up for the 4.8 miles / 7.7 km walk and I also didn’t want to walk along the A351 road as it is too dangerous. It doesn’t have a path to walk on and it is a national speed limit road.

There is a car park at Corfe Castle but I am unsure what the prices are and whether you are allowed to stay overnight. Corfe Village has on-road parking but I am unsure if there are any restrictions such as parking permits.

      Heads up:

I arrived late at about 20:30. When I got to the top of the hill, there was a group there that didn’t stay long and left down the hill and in the direction of the village.

It wasn’t long before a couple more groups came from the direction of Creech which is the opposite direction. I headed along the Purbecks in the direction they came from to waste some time. They didn’t stay too long and I only saw a couple more people later on walking along the hill.

I camped down just before 22:00 and saw no one after that. I was packed up and left by 04:30 as it was light enough for early dog walkers.

I found a tick on me and that was due to me camping in the long grass in July.

There were lots of helicopters flying around until the early hours. Some of them flew directly overhead. There are a few army bases in the area so they must have been doing some training.
