Tadnoll & Winfrith Nature Reserve Dorset

      Early June 2024

This was my first hammock camp in about 30 years and I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to doing some more. It will take me a few more camps for me to refine the art of setting up the hammock and getting things right.

It was my first time hammock camping in decades and I made the mistake of looking for that perfect spot and a couple of perfect trees.

I wandered around for a few hours checking out areas. I walked to the top of a few of the hills before back tracking and finding a spot close to the train lines and close to the track where I entered on Redbridge Road.

The map shows that the other side of the train tracks was heavily forested but I didn’t have enough time to check out both areas.

      Coordinates:

      50°41’24.2″N 2°17’14.3″W

      Getting there:

I got the train to Moreton station and arrived around 19:30 which left me a few hours of light to find a suitable spot.

It took around 45 minutes to walk the 2 miles / 3.2 km to Tadnoll Nature Reserve.

I entered via Redbridge Road where there was a small car park. Google maps showed a few other parking areas along Gatemore Road.

      Heads up:

There are plenty of places to camp around here and at the time, Tadnoll & Winfrith heath was wet and boggy in places. I stumbled upon a few flat grassy areas that would have been ideal for a bivi or a tent near to where I hung the hammock. I only saw one dog walker who had just parked up as I entered.

Other than that, I saw no one else and I had a quiet and uneventful night. There were no cars in the car park as I left at 5am.
