Hilltop, Jurassic Coast, Dorset: Nortent Skjul Bivvi Camp
Late May 2025
I decided that on this camp, I was going to bag a spot I’d been meaning to camp on for a while. I didn’t get the weather I’d hoped for, so the sunsets and sunrises were saved for another day.
I woke up in a wet mist or low cloud, with poor visibility. Still, the weather helped keep the area quiet, which was a positive, and something I can’t complain about.
I settled on a spot along an alternative path across the summit. I had a great view of the coast and surrounding area.
I knew the weather wouldn’t be great and that the wind would pick up, so I didn’t want to sleep out in the open and near the edge. The spot was fairly flat and surrounded by bracken, which offered some shelter from the wind – but not from the rain showers.
It was a quiet night. Good phone and internet signal too. I’d expected the area to be a bit busier, even with the forecast saying the weather wasn’t great, but it stayed quiet. This was my first visit here, and, I’m sure it gets a lot busier during the summer months.
It stayed light well past 9 p.m., and I was up just before 5 a.m.- there was already enough light by then, and I wanted to get out of the cloud and mist.
